Met with Rebeca de Franco, Director and discussed our possible involvement in a water project in San Pedro Ayampue. Which is located in one of Guatemala’s dry corridors that get less rain annually than the rest of the country.
Medium and High drought risk.
1 in 4 families have unsatisfied basic water needs.
Helping 46 families would mean drinking water accessor over 200 people.
(construct water cisterns at approx. $300 each)
We went with my American Legion Post from Antigua on Dec 19th; we handed out a $1,000 worth of Christmas gifts to the poor children in San Juan del Obispo. There was food served and also the ever present festive piñatas!
With donations from many different sources we were able to provide 25 efficient and vented wood stoves to families in Los Limones, Gualan. On March 12th, 17 were delivered to the families who had paid their Q200 share for the stoves. The families also needed to pay for transport. This was the agreement we made when we installed the demonstration stove at one of the elementary schools in Los Limones. The city of Gualan was a big help by providing one of their trucks to pick up the stoves here in Antigua. Thanks to all who helped!
On August 5th we held our first annual 5K walk and run to raise funds for water filters that will go the families of 60 special needs children in San Miguel Duenas, Gautemala. I'm sure it wasn't the largest turn-out for such an event, but the enthusiasm was unmatched!! The participants, many of whom had families or were from Guatemala themselves, new the problem of not having safe drinking water.
Only 13% of the piped water in Guatemala is safe to drink! Dang! And 3 millionpeople lack even that. The need of water filters is not just a "problem", it is a critical situation that must be dealt with. The filters we use cost only $50 each and last for 8 years! Imagine going from no water to 8 years of safe drinking eater for only $50. You can help with to bring safe water to more families in Guatemala by designating your donation for this purpose.
